Sailing in Grenada
Grenada, known as the “Spice Isle” of the Caribbean, provides an outstanding base for yacht owners and sailors. At the southern tip of the Windward Islands, the island combines natural beauty, excellent maritime infrastructure, a favourable climate, and a vibrant cultural scene. Many sailors choose Grenada for its safe anchorages, exceptional sailing conditions and strategic position at the southern end of the hurricane belt. The island offers a secure location for long-term stays and an exciting starting point for Caribbean exploration.
Anyone who has visited Grenada comments on the friendly and relaxed nature of the welcome they received. With plenty of attractions around the island it is well suited for shoreside exploration.
Grenada’s location outside the primary hurricane belt makes it a preferred destination for yacht owners seeking safety during storm season, which lasts from June to November. Reliable trade winds, usually from the northeast at 15-25 knots, ensure excellent sailing conditions throughout the year.
The island features well-sheltered anchorages and modern marinas. St. George’s, the capital, is home to Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina. This internationally recognised yachting hub accommodates vessels up to 300 feet.
Grenada also serves as an excellent gateway to the Grenadines, and islands such as Carriacou, Canouan and the Tobago Cays with their crystal-clear waters, coral reefs and secluded coves, are ideal for island-hopping.
Beyond that to the Eastern Caribbean chain of Windward and Leeward Islands and St Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, Guadeloupe and Antigua, can be explored largely with day-sails from one to the next With a few days to explore each island, and some time in hand to linger as you wish, a Caribbean sailing season fulfils all its promise.
Grenada has become a prime destination for Transatlantic and Round the World Rallies such as Arc+, Viking Explorer, World Arc and Oyster World Rally, reflecting its excellent Marine Facilities and warm welcome for visiting sailors.
Grenada hosts its own sailing events such as Grenada Sailing Week, which attracts international sailors for competitive racing. The Grenada Sailing Festival held on Grand Anse Beach reflects the island’s boat-building heritage with traditional wooden sailing boat races.
